Mud Motor
muhd moh-ter
noun
Definition
Mud Motors are used in oil and gas drilling operations. They are placed in the drill string to aid the drill bit while operating. These motors use drilling fluid (sometimes called drilling mud) that is pumped to create motion in the section of the drilling system that moves the drilling bit. Certain Mud Motors can even use compressed air or another form of a compressed gas to provide power to the drill bit. Depending on the type of earth that the drilling operation is dealing with, these motors can be calibrated to provide the desired power. If used correctly, Mud Motors can help improve efficiency and power of a down-hole drill bit.
