Definition
Abrasion is the process of wearing down, rubbing away, scuffing, or scratching. Sometimes referred to as wear-and-tear, Abrasion can be combated by regular Predictive Maintenance inspections, routine replacement, or a complete cataloging of the deterioration process. By knowing how much Abrasion is acceptable for a system to continue to function, maintenance technicians can predict how long internal components can function before failure. Most standardized materials will come with a rating for resistance. By using a mechanical arm or lever, some materials will be tested to see how resistant they are to deterioration. In some applications, using the proper lubricants can help control this issue.
